Use storage containers where you can to keep food fresh prior to use and to store any leftovers for reuse. I find that clingfilm can be very useful instead of a lid as you can see the food in the container so you are reminded of its being there to use in the fridge.

Always keep the clingfilm tightly wrapped around the top of the container and only use the clingfilm once.

The freezer is really useful for preserving food you can’t eat; buy robust freezer bags and a freezer pen (Lakeland sell both) so you can label and date as you freeze.

Nothing is worse than raking through the freezer trying to identify a pile of solid bags for a quick supper.

Bananas – over ripe bananas make the best banana bread. Also, if you have any unripe avocados, put them in a brown paper bag with a banana and the ripening banana gives off ethylene gas, which speeds up the ripening process for both avocado and banana.

Keep food in airtight containers or use clingfilm in the fridge to keep food fresh.

Once a month or so, you should go through your store cupboard and use up any packaged or tinned food that's getting close to its use-by date. Just making small changes like this can really make a big difference to the amount of food waste you produce.
